This variation can come about through various move orders. The initial position, shown in the diagram, is an exciting alternative to the Moeller Attack or the positional Bd2 lines in the Giuoco. Originally championed by Wilhelm Steinitz, more recently it was adopted by Evgeny Sveshnikov, who brought it back into fashion. The Giuoco SS is currently played by some enterprising Chinese and American grandmasters.

1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bc4 Bc5 4 c3 Nf6 5 d4 ed4 6 e5 - Italian Game move order.

1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 d4 ed4 4 Bc4 Bc5 4 c3 Nf6 6 e5 - Scotch Gambit move order.

1 e4 e5 2 d4 ed4 3 Nf3 Nc6 4 Bc4 Bc5 5 c3 Nf6 6 e5 - Hogeye Gambit move order.
